Crossing the Border: New Challenges for Canadians Traveling to the U.S.
In a recent interview with CBC’s Rafferty Baker, Vancouver Immigration Lawyer Cindy Switzer shed light on the evolving landscape of cross-border travel between Canada and the United States. With President Donald Trump’s emphasis on border security, Canadians are increasingly concerned about the risks associated with traveling to the U.S.
Switzer noted that while she hasn’t seen a surge in cases where Canadians are facing issues at the border, she has received more inquiries from clients worried about potential complications. “It’s definitely new that people are concerned about traveling through the border and consequences,” Switzer remarked.
For Canadian citizens without criminal convictions or health issues that could bar entry, travel to the U.S. should generally be straightforward. However, factors such as dual citizenship or place of birth can lead to longer waits and more questions. Switzer advised that having the proper paperwork is crucial, but she acknowledged the unpredictability of the current environment.
Megan McDermott from the BC Civil Liberties Association recommended that travelers be mindful of their electronic devices, as border officials have the right to search and seize them. McDermott suggested using burner phones or making social media accounts private to protect personal information.
Switzer emphasized that while thorough device searches and extra questioning are possibilities, most travelers won’t encounter these issues. She also noted that travelers have the option to withdraw their application for admission if they feel uncomfortable with the questioning.
The interview highlights a shift in the atmosphere at the border, with Switzer noting the impact of U.S. directives to enhance security. Canadians traveling to the U.S. should stay informed about border officials’ powers and potential risks.
